NPO, PBO or VAT Application: Services

NPO REGISTRATION

Apply to the Department of Social Development for NPO status to improve your credibility and funding opportunities.

  • Cost R 650

  • Turnaround time of about 12 weeks (dependent on DSD)

  • Main requirements: A trust, company or voluntary association of persons established for a public purpose; and of which its income and property are not distributable to its members or office bearers, except as reasonable compensation for services rendered.

PBO REGISTRATION

Apply to the Tax Exemption Unit at SARS for public benefit organisation (PBO) status to be entitled to tax benefits. Most Donors prefer organisations to be registered as PBO’s.

  • Cost R 4 500

  • Turnaround time of about 8 weeks (dependent on SARS)

  • Main requirements: Organisations must have as their primary objective, one or more of the Public Benefit Activities listed in Part 1 of the Ninth Schedule to the Income Tax Act (See FAQ’s).

VAT REGISTRATION

Apply to SARS for welfare organisation status and register as a VAT vendor, allowing you to claim back input VAT.

  • Cost R 2 250
     

  • Turnaround time of about 2 weeks (dependent on SARS)
     

  • Main requirements: Registered as a PBO and carrying out qualifying welfare activities as per VAT Act (See FAQ’s for the list of qualifying activities).
